about

I have so much to say about this album and I’ll try and make it as concise as I can but this might take a minute.

First:
All the songs on this album were written for and about Marina Madden (except for the hidden track but we’ll get to that). Basically this album is me trying, in the only medium I’m any good at, to hold up a mirror and reflect back to her what it feels like to be seen and loved by such a beautiful and pure ray of light, truth and love as she. She is the Sweet that these Beauty Songs are For and I love her more than words could ever say!

I started writing the songs for this album in the spring of 2020 when, like a lot of you I was stuck inside the house with nothing better to do. Cut to March of 2022 in an attic in Upstate New York myself, Donny Amidon and Will Lawrence got ourselves snowed in at the studio and recorded the bulk of the full band tunes in a day. Over the course of the next 8 months Donny worked his magic one piece at a time to bring the tunes to life. In July of 2022 myself and Kassi Valazza did a tour of the Northeast and while up in Maine for the Crabtree Sessions on North Haven Island Jake Robinson recorded my set and from that I plucked out “Over Dramatic” and “Dissatisfied” and put them on this album. The rest of the songs were recorded on my phone days before it went to be mastered. It really takes a village to make great art and I can’t express how grateful I am to all of the people who have helped me make this happen. I love you all!

In the span of two months while we were finishing this album I had 3 friends die. First was Luke Bell, followed by Shaney Howard and then Patrick Haggerty. I would like to dedicate this album to their memories. In a lot of ways this album would not exist without the three of them.

To Patrick Haggerty, who showed me it was possible to truly love everyone. There is a hidden track about 30 seconds after “Sweet Love (Outro)” ends and it’s of myself and Patrick Haggerty playing a song Patrick wrote called “All Disillusions” in a living room in Portland Oregon. I wanted to include it as a tribute to a dear friend who I love and miss very much. But I also find it to be a very fitting ending to the album which is basically a concept album about coming to terms with and letting go of my own dissolutions surrounding Love and having a front row seat to the way that he loved is family and friends and total strangers who would come see him perform was a huge life changer for me and is something that will always stay with me. I can’t thank Patrick enough for that.

To Luke Bell, who has always been an inspiration to me musically, his influence is sprinkled all over this record. He taught me by example how to use my voice in more dynamic ways not just to yell in key every time I sang but to be expressive and genuine and subtle. He was a true master and good friend.

To Shaney Howard who forgot more than I’ll ever know about music and friendship I can only hope to be half as kind and loving to the world as he was. When I was 20 years old trying to figure out how to play music for a living and trying to figure out where I could possibly fit in to the world he took me in and showed me so much love and grace and kindness. I truly could never explain what a gift his attention and friendship was to me and I owe so much of who I am today to those years spent sitting on porches, playing on stages and riding in vans with him.

I love you all and I can’t thank you enough for listening to the album and taking the time to read this.

I hope you enjoy it!!
